Being Different

An Indian Challenge to Western Universalism, thinker, and philosopher Rajiv Malhotra addresses the challenge of a direct and honest engagement on differences, by reversing the gaze, repositioning India from being the observed to the observer and looking at the West from the dharmic point of view. In doing so, he challenges many hitherto unexamined beliefs that both sides hold about themselves and each other. He highlights that while unique historical revelations are the basis for Western religions, dharma emphasizes self-realization in the body here and now. He also points out the integral unity that underpins dharma s metaphysics and contrasts this with Western thought and history as a synthetic unity.

As Hindus, we dance and sing our philosophy. Our highest literature is our philosophy. Our culture is never separate from our religion. When one says Namaste it is culture and it is also religion and also it is religious wisdom that we have got to back up religion.  

When the Lord of Nritya Sri Ganesha and Sri Nataraja are quietly thrown out of Rangamancha, when in the ‘Bharata Natyam’ Sri Vishnu and Sri Shiva mudra is replaced by Jesus mudra, when in the traditional lamp the Shankha, Chakra, Gada, Padma, and Hamsa is replaced with a Cross, when the famous bhajan ‘Krishna Nee Begane Baaro’ is changed to ‘Yesu Nee Begane Baaro’, when the devotion is taken out of the Nritya then it is called ‘Christian Bharata Natyam’. One may argue why Christian Bharata Natyam cannot be devotional? The Answer is simple. One who has left one’s own religion and has appropriated its culture will never be able to fill his heart with devotion. When one leaves his religion the culture leaves that individual too. 

The Christian Bharata Natyam was presented at the Vatican a few years ago. This appropriation, indigenization, alteration, digestion, and inculturation is happening for many years. The Vatican accepts and even promotes such inculturation to retain and protect converts in their own comfort zone.
What is Inculturation?
The Oxford Dictionary defines Inculturation as the gradual acquisition of the characteristics and norms of a culture or group by a person, another culture, etc. Simply put, Inculturation is the adaptation of Christian liturgy to a non-Christian cultural background.
What is Appropriation?
1. A deliberate act of acquisition of something, often without the permission of the owner.
2. The action of taking something for one’s own use, typically without the owner’s permission.
What is Digestion?
1. The absorption  of ideas
2. The process of absorbing  or the state of being absorbed
What is indigenization?
1. The infusion of indigenous ideas, values, peoples, symbols, aesthetics, procedures and an authentic history into an organization so that it is as thoroughly a product of indigenous imaginations and aspirations as it is of western or settler ones.
2. The fact of making something more native; the transformation of some service, idea etc. to suit a local culture, especially through the use of more indigenous people in the administration, employment etc.
3. Bring (something) under the control, dominance, or influence of the people native to an area.
What is Alteration?
1. Change that does not affect the basic character or structure of the thing it is applied to

C. Devassia (1906–2006), a Sanskrit scholar and poet from Kerala, India. For composing the Kristubhagavatam, Devassia won several awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award for Sanskrit (1980). Composed in 1976 and first published in 1977, the poem consists of 33 cantos and over 1600 verses. As a Mahakavya, it represents the most prestigious genre of Sanskrit epic poetry, characterized by ornate and elaborate descriptions.[1]

A minor footnote: Operation World is published by one of the most active missionary publication houses — its name? Om Publishing, Carlisle, UK!
That name tells a larger tale. Missionary publications set out how the dress of the clergy, how the ambiance in churches, how Christian ritual are to be “indigenized” so that people do not continue to look upon the church as foreign. Stating that the Cardinal President of the Consilium, His Eminence Benno Cardinal Gut, has accepted the proposals of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of India, a circular of Archbishop D. Simon Lourdusamy informed churches in the country,
“(1) The posture during Mass, both for priests and the faithful may be adapted to local usage, that is sitting on the floor, standing and the like; footwear may also be removed. 
(2) Genuflections may be replaced by the profound bow with the Anjali hasta.
(3) A Panchanga pranam by both priests and faithful can take place before the liturgy of the Word, as part of the Penitential Rite, and at the conclusion of the Anaphora. 
(4) Kissing of objects may be adapted to local customs, that is touching the object with one’s fingers or the palm of one’s hand and bringing the hands to one’s eyes or forehead. 
(5) The kiss of peace could be given by the exchange of Anjali hasta and/or the placing of the hands of the giver between the hands of the recipient. 
(6) Incense could be made use of in liturgical services. The receptacle could be the simple incense bowl with handle. 
(7) The vestments could be simplified. A single tunic-type chasuble with a stole (Angavastra) could replace the traditional vestments of the Roman rite…
(8) The corporal could be replaced by a tray (Thali or Thamboola thattu)
(9) Oil lamps could be used instead of candles. 
(10) The preparatory rite of the Mass may include: ….(b) the welcome of the celebrant in the Indian way, e.g. with a single arati, washing of hands etc.; (c) lighting of the lamp…
(11) In the Offertory rite and at the conclusion of the Anaphora the Indian form of worship may be integrated, that is, double or triple arati of flowers, and/or incense, and/or light….
 
An evangelical Internet site exults in how that ministry consciously avoids overturning the beliefs and practices of the target-peoples, how instead it ensures “deculturization” over an extended period by introducing into their awareness what it terms “functional substitutes” for those beliefs and practices. So much so that it commands its own logo too on this ground! We have not replaced the lotus, “which is supposed to be the seat of the Indian gods,” it reports, we have entrenched the Cross in it! While addressing the ignorant and illiterate in India this ministry will point to the lotus, while addressing the potential donor its selling-point is the opposite : “The inference is,” the site informs that donor, “that the historical Christ and the Cross must ultimately take the seat of these mythological deities and thereby Christianity should become deeply rooted in the culture of India.”

 Ashram Movement of Christians in India

During the two hundred years of British Raj, many western scholars became very interested in studying Hindu philosophy. The Christian scholars realized immediately how deep and complete the Dharma philosophy was, how it was in total agreement and harmony with material science and how it was unorganized but so organized! They were so impressed upon by its tenets and declarations that they started learning and writing extensively about it.  Perhaps they wished that they had such beautiful philosophy!. They wanted it all but the superiority of exceptionalism and Universalism of Christianity would not allow them to accept Dharma concepts by recognizing and respecting the source and also the History centric Nicene Creed would stop them at a point from believing in certain laws or tenets. They decided to have it all without damaging and leaving their religion.  Many Christians started appropriating and digesting Sanatana Dharma. ‘Christian Ashram’ was a new tactic where every aspect of Hinduism was appropriated. It was the height of stealing! 
When a Christian monk sheds the white and starts wearing orange and yellow ocher robes, where Yesu Sahasra Nama Archana, Yesu pooja, Yesu Ashtottara Namavali, Yesu Bhajans and Yesu Japa  is done, where BrahmaVishnumahesh look alike four face Yesu idol is kept in a Temple loo- alike Church, where Christian meditation is taught, where Vedas and Bhagavad Geeta is taught, where fasting is done for lent and feast, where a Church is called an Ashram, where Sanatana Dharma is taught as Christianity and where the highest appropriation and digestion of Hinduism is done by erasing and destroying the source is called a Christian Ashram. This is simply an arson, death, and destruction of our Dharma. This is an aggressive movement by Christians to convert people from India. ’tis the epitome of inculturation and digestion and is a perfect trap for gullible Hindus. Christian Ashrams are popping up all across India. Such Ashrams get foreign funding. Mostly from American Christian Funds. We need to start to learn Hindu Sanatana Dharma as Hindus or one day we might have to learn Christian Sanatana Dharma as Christians. As responsible Hindus, we must protest this inculturation to protect our Dharma.

– For more than twenty years we have engaged in dialogue with Hinduism and Buddhism, hosting “Monastic Exchange” programs organized by Buddhist associations and the Benedictine dialogue commission (DIM-MID). Our monks Bemardino Cozzarini and Thomas Matus have often been in India, facilitating the incorporation into our congregation of Saccidananda Ashramfounded in South India by Fathers Jules Monchanin and Henri Le Saux and later guided by Father Bede Griffiths. 
– Father Thomas Matus is also a consultor for the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue and teaches a course on Hindu and Buddhist monasticism at the Benedictine Faculty in Rome. 
The “eldest” of our communities outside Italy is in India, where the presence of the Church dates back to sub-apostolic times. Saccidananda Ashram, Shantivanam, in Tamil Nadu did not, of course, begin as a Camaldolese community. It was founded on the feast of Saint Benedict, March 21, 1950, by Father Jules Monchanin, priest of the diocese of Lyons, and Father Henri Le Saux, monk of the Abbey of Kergonan in France. They took Indian names (respectively Parama-Arupi -Ananda and Abhishiktananda), donned the orange robes of the Hindu monks, and prayed in Sanskrit and Tamil. After Father Monachnin’s death in 1957 and Swami Abhishiktananda’s departure for the Himalayas in 1968, the Ashram was guided by an English monk Father Bede Griffiths. In 1980 he became a member of our community, and until his death in 1993 continued to form a group of young Indian men, who are working toward building the monastic community at the service of the Ashram, which retains its special characteristics in accordance with ancient India tradition and the vision of the three founders. 

In recent years two Indian women have made their solemn monastic profession as Camaldolese nuns. One has lived for many years next to Shantivanam and has established an ashram which expands Shantivanam’s capacity for receiving guests in a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The other has just completed construction on a monastery near Mysore (Jfianodaya Ashram). Soon she will be joined by two more Indian women, currently in Rome preparing for their solemn vows. 
Final Propositions Synod Bishops call for a new wave of Evangelization in Asia – by John Thavis 
VATICAN CITY (CNS) – In a list of final propositions, the Synod of Bishops for Asia called for a new wave of evangelization on the continent, one that emphasizes Christ as Savior but recognizes Asian ways of expressing the faith. 
The propositions firmly placed the church on the side of Asia’s “teeming millions” of poor and disadvantaged, particularly women and children, and said Catholic institutions should help empower them.

The document said the authentic values of all Asian religions – including Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism – find “their fullness and realization” in Christ, and this belief must be at the center of all the Catholic Church’s activities. 
The synod said the moment has come to “commit all of the church’s energies to a new evangelization” in Asia. Sharing the faith in Christ is “the best service we can make” to the people of the continent, it said.

While endorsing dialogue with other religions and respect for their beliefs, the document said Christians engaged in such dialogue must retain a “clear Christian identity.”

He concluded his remarks by calling on the “sister churches” of the first world to increase their role in Asia. They can be involved in monitoring trade to protect weaker nations; promoting the human side of the business, and canceling or reducing the debts that strangle many Asian countries. Only in this way, can we build the “civilization of love” called for by the Holy Father? Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil of Verapoly pointed out that the minority of Catholics in Asia is brought about because all five of the great religions of the world strongly oppose the change of religion. Since Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism are very strong in the various countries of Asia, it follows that Christianity will have problems making inroads.

Gullible and desperate villagers are told that their traditional gods are actually corrupted versions of Christ; that the venerable saints and sages of India’s past were really Christians; that the three horizontal stripes traditionally drawn on the foreheads of Shiva devotees stand for the Holy Trinity; that the Upanishadic prayer that includes “Lead us from darkness to light” was meant as a cry for Jesus to save them.

As Hindus, we dance and sing our philosophy. Our highest literature is our philosophy. Our culture is never separate from our religion. When one says Namaste it is culture and it is also religion and also it is religious wisdom that we have got to back up religion.  

When the Lord of Nritya Sri Ganesha and Sri Nataraja are quietly thrown out of Rangamancha, when in the ‘Bharata Natyam’ Sri Vishnu and Sri Shiva mudra is replaced by Jesus mudra, when in the traditional lamp the ShankhaChakraGadaPadma and Hamsa is replaced with a Cross, , when the famous bhajan ‘Krishna Nee Begane Baaro’ is changed to ‘Yesu Nee Begane Baaro’, when the devotion is taken out of the Nritya then it is called ‘Christian Bharata Natyam’. One may argue why Christian Bharata Natyam cannot be devotional? The answer is simple. One who has left one’s own religion and has appropriated its culture will never be able to fill his heart with devotion. When one leaves his religion the culture leaves that individual too. 

The Christian Bharata Natyam was presented at the Vatican a few years ago. This appropriation, indigenization, alteration, digestion, and inculturation is happening for many years. The Vatican accepts and even promotes such inculturation to retain and protect converts in their own comfort zone.
